Duval snabbast på shakedownen inför rally Tyskland.

Duval quickest in German shakedown

By David Evans Thursday, August 14th 2008, 12:24 GMT

Francois Duval celebrated his return to the World Rally Championship with fastest time on this morning's shakedown for Rallye Deutschland.

Duval, who is driving for the Stobart Ford outfit in Germany, was more than a second faster than six-time event winner Sebastien Loeb on the 5.8km shakedown stage near the event's base in Trier.

But the Belgian played down his chances of winning his first event since the Monte Carlo Rally in January.

"It's nice to be back, but don't forget I have been at home for seven months," he said. "To get in the car and be right up to speed is going to be really difficult. The car is good and the set-up I have is very nice. I'm really happy with the car, but it's not going to be an easy event."

Duval tested the 2007-specification Ford last week, but is concerned at his lack of wet-weather running in the Focus.

"It's Germany, it's going to rain tomorrow morning, you know that," he said. "I don't know so much about what the car will do in the rain - that's going to be completely new for me.

"I'm sure there will be a lot of mud in every corner when the rain's coming, so running further back on the road, where I am, it's going to be harder than being at the front."

Loeb's teammate Dani Sordo was second fastest in the shakedown, six tenths down on Duval's 3m35.5s benchmark. Ford driver Mikko Hirvonen was third, posting a 3m36.3s on his fifth and final run in the latest-specification 2008 Focus.

"It's nice to have the new car," said Hirvonen. "But it's not a massive change from the last one, just some things in the engine."

Having lost his home round of the WRC (Finland) to Loeb 10 days ago, the championship leader is desperate for revenge in Germany.

"He's won every one of these rallies," said Hirvonen. "That's got to end some time. Why not this time?"

Injured Galli sidelined for five months

By David Evans Friday, August 15th 2008, 18:55 GMT

Gigi GalliGigi Galli will be out of the World Rally Championship for five months following his high-speed accident in the fifth stage of Rallye Deutschland today.

The Italian was taken to Barmherzige Hospital close to rally headquarters in Trier where his fractured left femur will be operated on this evening.

A source close to the Stobart Ford driver said: "The doctors have said it will be five months before he is ready to compete again. It's a great shame for Gigi."

If Galli's recovery does take the full five months, he won't drive again until next February's 2009 World Rally Championship opener, Rally Ireland.

In the meantime, the Stobart team will have to make a quick decision about who replaces Galli for Rally New Zealand, which starts in Hamilton 11 days after the finish of Rallye Deutschland.

Replacing Galli for the the North Island event will not be a straightforward process. Matthew Wilson is already listed as a potential Stobart point-scorer, while Henning Solberg has been drafted into the Munchi's outfit.

Francois Duval, running in the Stobart team in Germany is one possibility, as is Briton Barry Clark, who stepped into replace Munchi's driver Luis Perez Companc when the Argentinian was forced home on business earlier in the season.

Francois Duval ska köra New Zealand rallyt.

Stobart confirm Galli replacement for NZ.

The Stobart VK M-Sport Ford Rally Team has announced that Francois Duval has been chosen to replace the injured Gigi Galli for the Repco Rally New Zealand.

Duval will be entered in the 'second' car, with Matthew Wilson the other nominated point scoring driver, as Henning Solberg is already committed to making another 'guest' appearance for the Munchi's Ford World Rally Team.

Duval, who took a fantastic third place finish in Germany last weekend, what was his first outing in the WRC since the Rallye Monte Carlo back in January, was always the favourite to get the call as he was already down to do the other two remaining tarmac events in Spain and Corsica later this year.

Indeed while the Belgian is now regarded as a bit of an asphalt specialist, he has competed on gravel a number of times and demonstrated his ability to deliver on the loose most notably in Australia in 2005, when he took his one and only victory in the WRC.

The outing in NZ is also logical as it will allow him more time behind the wheel of his Focus RS WRC07.

"We will be very happy to have Francois back in the Stobart team for New Zealand," said Ford/M-Sport boss Malcolm Wilson.

"He did a great job in Germany last weekend and as he is already confirmed to compete in Spain and Corsica, it will be a good opportunity for him to gain more valuable experience and time in the car."

Who will call the pace-notes for Duval meanwhile has still to be confirmed and while usually a team may only change one element of the entry – something that would mean Giovanni Bernacchini would have to act as co-driver, the Stobart team management are currently requesting special permission from the FIA to change both the driver and co-driver elements due to the obvious safety issue brought about by the language barrier. If this is confirmed then Patrick Pivato will join Duval for the eleventh round in the WRC.

Duval replaces Latvala for asphalt

Francois Duval will return to the official Ford team for the first time since 2004 when he replaces Jari-Matti Latvala alongside Mikko Hirvonen for the Catalunya Rally and Tour de Corse in October.

Latvala will stand-down from the BP Abu Dhabi official team and return to the Stobart outfit, where Duval was scheduled to drive for the World Rally Championship's brace of October asphalt outings.

"Francois was due to drive a Focus RS WRC for the Stobart team in Spain and Corsica," said BP Ford Abu Dhabi team director Malcolm Wilson. "His abilities on asphalt are well known to us from his time as a works Ford driver from 2002 to 2004 and this decision will strengthen our-line up for those two rallies.

"A third consecutive manufacturers' world title is our aim this season and Francois' experience of these two specialised rallies will maximise our chances of obtaining strong results."

Duval, who has one WRC win to his credit, finished third in Corsica in a Focus RS WRC in 2003 and second in Spain in 2005.

"I'm delighted that Malcolm has the confidence to nominate me for the BP Ford Abu Dhabi team," said Duval.

"After several seasons with Ford previously I'm comfortable with the set-up here. New Zealand will be my third rally in a Focus RS WRC this season so I also feel confident with the car. I hope I can score well on both asphalt rallies and play my part in Ford retaining the world title."

Duval fastest in New Zealand shakedown.

Ford's new favoured driver Francois Duval kicked off his Rally New Zealand in style by claiming the fastest time during pre-event shakedown in his Stobart VK Ford Focus.

Best known for his exploits on asphalt, Duval got the nod for New Zealand in place of Gigi Galli, who is currently recovering from the broken leg sustained on Rallye Deutschland.

The Belgian swiftly rewarded the team for their faith in him by completing the 3.08km shakedown stage in 2mins 26secs, marginally faster than works driver Jari-Matti Latvala, the driver he will replace in the factory team for the upcoming Tarmac-based events in Spain and Corsica.

Still, Duval, who won his one and only WRC rally in Australia three years ago, was not reading too much into the times, even if he was pleased to get the chance to shine again.

“It's been a long time since I've driven a Ford Focus on a gravel rally but the car feels really nice,” said Duval. “But this weekend is going to be difficult for me. The stages are completely new and so are the car and the tyres. In fact everything is new.

“Of course it feels good to be fastest today - it's not bad - but the road isn't very representative of tomorrow's stages, so we have to wait and see how we get on.”

Mikko Hirvonen and Petter Solberg shared the third fastest time, just seven tenths behind Duval, while Dani Sordo made a good start in fifth place, ahead of championship leading team-mate Sebastien Loeb, the Frenchman making a modest start to the weekend as he readies himself for the task of being first on the road.

Matthew Wilson showed fine form in seventh, ahead of sometime team-mate Henning Solberg, who will be driving the Munchi's Focus this weekend. Subaru's Chris Atkinson and Urmo Aava in his privateer Citroen C4 rounded out the top ten.

Elsewhere, the two Suzukis of Toni Gardemeister and Per-Gunnar Andersson completed shakedown with the 11th and 13th best times.

Shakedown times:

1. Francois Duval Stobart VK Ford Focus WRC 07 2mins 26.0secs M
2. Jari-Matti Latvala BP Ford Abu Dhabi Focus RS WRC 07 2mins 26.4secs M
3=. Mikko Hirvonen BP Ford Abu Dhabi Focus RS WRC 07 2mins 26.7secs M
